Is anyone a middle power? The case for historicization

چکیده
Abstract What should happen to a concept as it loses real-world application? The of ‘middle power’ rose prominence in the mid-20 th century, establishing an influential practitioner–scholarly nexus over next several decades. This prestigious history came at cost, embedding three core assumptions into concept: that middle powers are International focus, Multilateral method, and Good Citizens conduct. While there have been significant attempts by scholars reform concept, power theory has proven inseparable from these assumptions. In this paper, we examine six states (Canada, Australia, South Korea, Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico) show no longer helps us distinguish or interpret states. Changes international environment suggest finding will endure. As such, argue for historicization power’. We conclude identifying series analytical puzzles which researchers need address develop appropriate conceptual lexicon theorizing type state 21 st century.
